Design Elements for a French Inspired Wedding

We were inspired by a few things when conceptualizing this design. First, was the yearning to travel at a time when that was not possible (thanks, Covid). France has always held an air of mystique and romance that we wanted to capture right here in Calgary, Alberta.

Second, was the pale blue palette that we saw on a cake and just knew that was going to be a main component of our design. You’ll see touches of whimsy and elegance that make you think of a quaint parisian town in the south of France. From the petite gâteaux at the table settings to the vintage street lamps, every detail was thoughtfully curated.

The ceremony set up featured a stunning floral arrangement and a painted backdrop next to a vintage street lamp from Coven Creative. Our real life couple had always wanted the opportunity to redo their wedding photos, so this was the perfect fit. Our bride even wore her Grandmother’s wedding ring for the occasion.

To further transform The Nash restaurant, we had a floral cloud installation hanging over the table to give the illusion of sitting outside a french bistro. The table was dressed in a dusty blue velvet linen and adorned with bud vases of anemones and calla lilies and white tapered candles. The table settings each had fancy menu booklets with gold acrylic place cards attached to them. Imagine how special it would feel to be a guest at this wedding! We carried the gold elements throughout the tablescape in the modern flatware and candlestick holders.

When designing your own wedding, we encourage you to consider these five elements; colour, texture, emphasis, proportion + scale and style. For example, this wedding design had the following elements:

Colour: Soft Blue, Gold, Cream, White

Texture: Velvet, Metal, Paper

Emphasis (aka focal points): Floral installation, ceremony backdrop

Proportion + Scale: the large hanging floral installation was balanced out with small bud vases with minimal stems on the table below

Style: Elegant, Whimsical, Modern

The harmony between these elements will create your overall atmosphere and ambience. As you can see in this Parisian themed wedding shoot, ours was romantic, dreamy and elegant. As a guest attending this wedding, how would you feel? How do these images make you feel? That feeling is our biggest goal when we design client’s weddings.

Our real married couple loved joining us on this shoot. It gave them a second chance at their wedding photos, as they were never happy with their original ones, and they enjoyed every minute of playing dress up to capture their romance.
